Mill Hill East is an above-ground London Underground station in the London Borough of Barnet . It is in the Travelcard tariff zone 4 on Bittacy Hill. In 2013, 1.17 million passengers used the station, which is served by the Northern Line and is one of the three northern terminus of this line.

investment

A train leaves Mill Hill East heading south; the free space on the right was kept free for a second track, but was never used.
Look at the buffer stop; the track bed behind it was built over.

The subway has only been running here since the early 1940s, but the station was built more than seventy years earlier as a stop for a suburban railway. The station building still has many architectural features from the Victorian era . Besides Finchley Central , Mill Hill East is one of the oldest surviving parts of the London Underground. A special feature is that the station only has a single track.

history

The breakpoint was opened on August 22, 1867 by the Edgware, Highgate and London Railway (EH&LR) along with the Finsbury Park - Edgware route. In July 1867, just before opening, the larger Great Northern Railway (GNR) took over EH&LR. The breakpoint was initially called Mill Hill .

The EH&LR was built on a single track, with the intention of adding a second track as the volume of traffic increased. However, after the GNR had opened the branch line between Finchley Central and High Barnet on April 1, 1872 , this proved to be significantly more in demand. For this reason the second track was never built between Finchley Central and Edgware; Passengers mostly had to change trains at Finchley Central. The station was renamed several times and received the name still in use today in 1928. With the Railways Act 1921 , all railway companies in the country were combined into four large companies; the GNR went into 1923 in the London and North Eastern Railway (LNER).

As part of the Northern Heights project, the rail lines to Edgware and High Barnet were to be integrated into the subway network. In preparation for this, track and electrification work began on the entire route. At the beginning of the Second World War , these were already well advanced, but then had to be discontinued. On September 11, 1939, the LNER stopped passenger services between Finchley Central and Edgware. However, in order to be able to offer a quick connection to the barracks in Mill Hill, the electrification of the short section was completed, but the line remained single-track. On May 18, 1941, the Northern Line began operating the underground. The expansion work on the route between Mill Hill East and Edgware was finally abandoned after the end of the war due to lack of money.

The section west of Mill Hill East has never been used by subways, but there were occasional freight trains powered by steam locomotives. In 1964 the remaining route was finally closed. The track and most of the infrastructure have since been removed or torn down, but the former route is still clearly visible in places.
