Millersville (Jarvis Island)
Millersville was a small settlement on Jarvis Island , a now uninhabited island in the South Pacific .
history
On March 26, 1935, the first four settlers were brought to the island with the USCGC Itasca under the Baker, Howland and Jarvis Colonization Scheme . They founded a first settlement there in the west of the island. This was initially used primarily for weather observation. A runway was also planned so that the island could be reached by plane.
Due to the war events in the Pacific, the island was evacuated in February 1942 after being shot at by Japanese forces. No further attempts at colonization were made after the end of the war.
During the International Geophysical Year 1957, scientists came to the island again, but they left again in 1958.
