The Mingalazedi Pagoda (Burmese မင်္ ဂ လာ စေ တီ, pronounced: mɪ̀ɴɡəlà zèdì; also Mingalar Zedi Pagoda ) is a Buddhist stupa in Bagan , Myanmar .

history

King Narathihapate began construction in 1274 and the pagoda was completed in 1284, a few years before the Mongols conquered Bagan and put an end to the Bagan Empire. Mingalazedi is thus one of the last large buildings in Bagan.

description

The pagoda is made of bricks. It rests on a rectangular base; On all four sides stairs lead up to the main stupa over three terraces. There are small stupas on the corners of the terraces. The unglazed terracotta panels with scenes from the Jatakas, a collection of legends from the life of Buddha, are remarkable. Unfortunately, many of the panels have been lost or damaged.
