Mini cat

Minkat

A minikat or mini-Kat is a retrofittable, additional catalyst in order to improve the exhaust emissions from older cars . In most cases, the existing Euro1 (= E2) standard can be increased to Euro 2 or even D3 . The vehicle tax to be paid is reduced. Depending on the car model, the Minikat replaces a clamp in the exhaust system and can therefore be installed with little effort. Minikats are available for both gasoline and diesel cars.

The advantages over alternatives such as the cold run controller are:

  • Lowest acquisition costs (as of 2006);
  • no intervention in the engine technology necessary;
  • reduced pollutant emissions even after the cold running phase.

A disadvantage is a possible loss of engine power due to the increased back pressure in the exhaust system, which can also lead to increased counter pressure (stress on the exhaust manifold). A UMA is carried out after installation . The documents required for registration with the road traffic authority are the vehicle documents, the UMA test certificate and an installation certificate, which is usually enclosed with the Minikat and must be completed by the AU-authorized installation workshop or (in the case of self-assembly) the Tüv / Dekra / GTÜ. In addition, the article is usually accompanied by a tax change request, which may be omitted depending on the region. The responsible vehicle registration office provides information on this.
