Mirnyy Island

Mirnyy Island is an island off the south coast of South Georgia in the South Atlantic . It is the closest to the coast of two neighboring islands halfway between the bays Ranvik and Trollhul . It belongs to the breeding areas of the wandering albatross .

The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee named it in 2009. It is named after the Mirny , Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen's research ship on the first Russian Antarctic expedition (1819–1821).
