Right in the middle of Berlin! The Centers Initiative

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Right in the middle of Berlin! The Centers Initiative is a competition initiated by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry Berlin and the Senate Department for Urban Development and the Environment, which together with partners from the private sector ( public-private partnership ) has been awarding prize money of € 100,000 for innovative location concepts since 2005 . On the part of the State of Berlin, the Senate Department for Economics, Technology and Research also supports the process.

history

Right in the middle of Berlin! The center initiative developed from the competition procedure “Off to the middle of North Rhine-Westphalia” , which arose in 1999. With the help of city marketing concepts like this one at the end of the 1990s, the municipalities in North Rhine-Westphalia were supported in dealing with the consequences and effects of structural change in the economy (including vacancies , increasing number of branches , desertification of public spaces, and an increase in large-scale retailing outside the city as well ) to oppose. After North Rhine-Westphalia, Hesse, Lower Saxony and Saxony, the state of Berlin also took part in this initiative. However, it is not - as in the other federal states - the name “Off to the middle”. By 2013, they had honored a total of 22 location initiatives in Berlin.

Goal of the competition

Berlin consists of twelve districts , which are divided into so-called Kieze with specific local characteristics. The competition aims to change the perception of centers and shopping streets for the better and to increase their economic attractiveness. This makes it a PR tool for neighborhood development at the intersection of city marketing , urban development , business and culture .

Procedure

Since the 2008 round there has been a two-stage process. In a first phase, the participating location partnerships submit an idea outline and a description of their financial feasibility, which must relate to the current motto of the procedure. In addition, applicants are asked to present their network and provide an overview of the financing of their idea. In the following qualification phase, the eight to ten initiatives nominated by a jury have the opportunity to work out their concepts and develop them further. In a second jury meeting, the winners will be determined from the qualified entries submitted. As a rule, there are three equal winners, among whom the prize money is divided.
