Mizong

Mizong ( Chinese  密宗 , Pinyin Mìzōng , W.-G. Mi-tsung ) is a comprehensive term for all schools of esoteric or tantric Buddhism ( Vajrayana ) widespread in China . The esoteric teachings themselves are collectively referred to as Mijiao ( Chinese  密 教 , Pinyin Mìjiào , W.-G. Mi-chiao ).

Esoteric Buddhism was imported from India to China during the Tang Dynasty by Śubhākarasiṃha (637-735), Vajrabodhi (671-741) and Amoghavajra (705-774).

It experienced its heyday in the 9th century and later in the 13th and 14th. Century. He influenced the teachings of the Huayan and the Tiantai zong (cf. Tendai-shū ) and came to Japan in the 9th century , where he was known under the name mikkyō ( 密 教 ) in the form of the Shingon-shū (equivalent of the Chinese Zhenyan zong ) .
