The mobile slewing crane 404 (MDK 404) is a self-propelled rope crane that was developed and produced in the Kirow factory in Leipzig . It was a further development of the MDK 160/1. The development took place in the years 1968 to 1969. The production time was from 1971 to 1977. During this time 277 pieces were produced.

Technology and structure

The MDK 404 was a 4-axle, single-tire all-wheel-drive mobile slewing crane. The diesel-mechanical drive was provided by a 6-cylinder diesel engine with an output of 105.9 kW. The crane was controlled electro-pneumatically. The maximum driving speed was 48 km / h. The climbing ability was only 26%. The rear axle steering was switched off for transport and the boom and counterweights removed. The steering system was hydraulically assisted and the vehicle had a two-circuit air brake, which worked on all wheels. The axles were individually suspended from coil springs and had a differential lock. The springs were pneumatically blocked during crane operation. The undercarriage is a welded construction. The MDK 404 had a 6 m fly jib which guaranteed a load moment of 160 Mpm and a load capacity of 40/17 t. The boom consisted of a tubular grid construction made of high-strength steel. A lifting height of up to 48 m could be achieved using intermediate pieces. To secure the load, a load torque fuse and corresponding limit switches were provided. For the grab operation for handling bulk goods , either a two-rope grab of 1 m³ or 1.25 m³ was used. The main lifting mechanism acted as a holding mechanism and the auxiliary lifting mechanism as a closing mechanism. The hydraulic support was attached to the front of the undercarriage. No second hoist was required to assemble the boom and counter load .

MDK 404 T

Tower rotating equipment was also developed when the MDK 404 was being developed in 1969. This should enable a lifting height of 21.5 m and a jib radius of 20 m. The load torque was 120 Mpm. During the testing, structural-static problems emerged, whereupon the development did not go beyond a functional model.

MDK 404 C

Another variant was to be developed specifically for handling containers. In 1974 3 mobile cranes MDK 404 C were built. A maximum load capacity of 20 t could be achieved with the help of additional counterweights. Hydraulic support should enable quick work. The travel speed when moving with maximum load capacity was 1 km / h.
