In astrology , the different signs of the zodiac can be divided into three different modalities . This is a type of classification that groups the form of expression of each character. The three modalities are the cardinal sign , the fixed sign and the movable sign . All animal / zodiac signs can be classified into these three groups and are thus summarized with matching personality or character traits. The three modalities follow one another in the zodiac and are determined by different cardinal energies .

To understand the signs, there are three different ways of classifying them: the modalities, the polarities and the elements. The modalities are thus an aid to separate the zodiac and thus to better understand it.
