The Mogami ( Japanese 最 上 氏 , Mogami-shi ) were a family of the Japanese sword nobility ( Buke ) of the Sengoku period from the province of Dewa . They lost their rank as daimyo in 1632.

genealogy

  • Yoshiakira ( 義 光 ; 1540–1614), son of Yoshimori ( 義 守 ; 1521–1590), took advantage of the weakness of the shogunate towards the end of the Sengoku period and enlarged his territory at the expense of his neighbors. He then submitted to Toyotomi Hideyoshi and gave his daughter Hidetsugu , Toyotomi Hideyoshi's adopted son, to wife. When Hidetsugu fell from grace and lost his life in 1595, his daughter and her children also lost their lives despite Yoshiakira's requests. So it was no wonder that Yoshiakira joined Tokugawa Ieyasu and took part in the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600, where he fought against Uesugi Kagakatsu. Yoshiakira expanded Yamagata Castle to its final size. After 1600 he was awarded an income of 250,000 koku .
  • Iechika ( 家 親 ; 1582-1617), son of Yoshiakiras, continued the line.
  • Yoshitoshi ( 義 俊 ; 1605–1632), son of Iechikas, lost his large territory in 1622 due to poor administration and was transferred to Ōmori ( Ōmi province ) with an income of only 10,000 koku . He died with no offspring, so that line became extinct.

Mogami descendants from other lines continued to hold court positions.
