Monaka ( Japanese 最 中 ) is a Japanese sweet that consists of two mochi rice wafers with a layer of adzuki bean paste between them .

The original monaka wasn't filled with bean paste. For this sticky rice powder (Mochireis) was put in water, kneaded, steamed, then rolled out and baked. The pastry was then cut into a round shape and dusted with sugar. In the Edo period , the idea of adding bean paste to the dough was born, which became popular throughout the country during the Meiji period .

In recent years, monaka, which is filled with ice cream rather than bean jam, has been increasingly sold. It is called Monaka ice cream ( モ ナ カ ア イ ス , Monaka Aisu ).
