Monsieur de Sainte-Colombe (the younger)
Monsieur de Sainte-Colombe le fils (ie the younger ) (* approx. 1660; † after 1713) was a French viol player and composer of the Baroque , about whose person very little is known, but who left traces in Great Britain between 1707 and 1713 . From his curriculum vitae it is practically only certain that he worked as a viol teacher in Edinburgh around 1707 . In addition, its existence is mentioned by Rémond de Saint-Mard (1682–1757) in the work Réflexions sur l'opéra . He was therefore an illegitimate son of the famous, but also not known by name, Monsieur de Sainte-Colombe (the elder). The latest evidence of his biography mentions May 14, 1713, on this date a benefit concert took place in London in his presence. Some sources assume his date of death was around 1720.
Works
6 suites for viola da gamba solo are known, including a large-scale tombeau on the death of his father, which can be considered a sister work to the Marin Marais piece for the same occasion . The pieces are preserved in a manuscript in the library of Durham Cathedral (England), where apparently another member of the Sainte-Colombe family worked.
