Moor End Castle
Moor End Castle , and More End Castle is a ruined castle against the Moor End Farm at the Moor End Road ' near the village of Yardley Gobion in the English county of Northamptonshire .
The castle was created in 1347 when Thomas de Ferrers received royal permission to fortify his house in Moor End (English: License to Crenellate). Later owners sold them to the crown in 1363.
King Edward III visited Moor End Castle regularly in the 1360s; he had a royal apartment and a royal chapel built and the dilapidated gatehouse rebuilt.
Over the next two centuries the castle passed through a number of royal and common hands, but then fell into disrepair around 1580. That year it was classified as "completely in ruins, [so that] not a piece of wood or stone was left." In 1650 and 1728 the site was referred to as "Castle Yard" and in the 1830s a tenant of Castle Close took out over 2000 meters of stones when he was digging for the foundations.
In the 1970s, the only remnant of the castle was a heavily modified moat , which was fed by a watercourse that runs from Potterspury Lodge through Moor End to the village of Potterspury . Today all that is left is a wooded island surrounded by a moat.
