The Moravian Mission Museum is in Genadendal in the Western Cape , South Africa .

location

The Moravian Mission Museum and the historic church district are on the Werf . It is in a central location in town. The shipyard also houses the church, the Middelhuis, two parsonages, a former printing press, a guest house, the mill and various buildings for church purposes. The missionary cemetery and the Khoi Khoi cemetery are also located there.

history

In 1837 the first training center for teachers and national assistants in South Africa was established here. This building is now the Moravian Mission Museum.

The Moravian Mission Museum is the only museum in South Africa whose contents have been declared a National Treasure.

It contains documents from the time Genadendal was first settled, furniture, instruments, handicrafts and parts of the printing works established in 1859 (Genadendalse Drukkery). The Bible that Georg Schmidt brought to South Africa in 1737 and that he left behind for the local Khoi Khoi woman, Vehettge Tikkuie (Moeder Lena) when he was expelled in 1744 , is also on display.

On the so-called "Erfenisdag" (Heritage Day / Erbtag) on ​​October 25th, a large number of events on the subject of "Genadendal's history" are offered.

On October 10, 1995 , President Nelson Mandela visited Genadendal and the Moravian Mission Museum and paid tribute to the Moravian Church's services to the oppressed people.
