The Moreeb Dune ( Arabic تل مرعب, DMG Tall Murʿib  'terrible hill'; also Tel Moreeb) is part of the Rub al-Chali .

geography

With a height of 120 meters, the dune is the highest sand dune in the Rub al-Chali. It is located 22 ° 58 '47 "  N , 53 ° 47' 10"  O coordinates: 22 ° 58 '47 "  N , 53 ° 47' 10"  O in the vicinity of the Liwa Oasis in the emirate Abu Dhabi , where the oasis center Muzairi (Mezairaa) from an approximately 25 km long asphalt road (16 km as the crow flies) leads directly through the sand dune fields to it.

The length of the Moreeb dune is approx. 1600 meters and its steep angle of inclination of about 50 degrees is the reason that the viewer has the optical impression that this natural phenomenon extends almost vertically in front of him. Because of its special characteristics, it was given the name "Scary Mountain".

tourism

Every year in winter the dune is used as a venue for typical desert motor sports such as dune racing as part of the 7-day Liwa International Festival. Tourists from all over the world then follow the competitions organized there, which are separated into "Cars" and "Bikes", the aim of which is to reach the dune ridge with vehicles of all kinds.
