Mot Havet

Mot Havet is a monument in the Norwegian city of Ålesund .

It is located on the south side of Kiperviktorget Square by the city's harbor.

Mot Havet (meaning in German roughly: seaward) commemorates the dead in the loss of seven open fishing boats on the open sea northwest of Ålesund during a heavy storm on August 13, 1885. 33 fishermen were killed. They left 29 widows and 113 children. Many of the families lived east of the site of the monument in Buholmen , Buholmstranda and Røysa . The monument also commemorates the fishing population of the area at the time. The monument was unveiled on June 6, 1989.

Mot Havet consists of a statue of a young woman who looks out over the water and shields her eyes from the sunlight with her right hand. Mot Havet was created by Kirsten Kokken . Kokken's design won first prize in an open competition for a monument to Buholmen in 1985. The statue stands on a high pedestal. On the south side there is the inscription MOT HAVET on the base . There are two panels on the back. The upper smaller one gives details in Norwegian about the artist, the time of installation and funding. A larger plaque below provides information in English on these aspects and also on the reason for the erection of the monument.

Funding came from many public and private donors.
