Motorola StarTAC

The Motorola StarTAC is a mobile phone from Motorola and the first clamshell phone in the world. The StarTAC was the successor to the MicroTAC . The cell phone was introduced in the United States on January 3, 1996, when it was the smallest and lightest cell phone in the world. It was also one of the first phones in the world to have a vibrating alarm. A total of 60 million pieces were sold. PC World magazine named the clamshell sixth among the 50 most important gadgets of the past 50 years . Time magazine chose the mobile phone in its list of the best gadgets of the past ninety years.

In 2004 Motorola brought out a special edition for the Korean market. The French company Lekki is trying to build on the success of the cell phone and has been offering, among other things, original StarTAC cell phones refurbished and with slight design changes to the housing since 2010 .
