Mstislav of Chernigov

Mstislav Vladimirovich (* around 983; † 1034/36) was Prince of Tmutarakan (around 988-1034 / 36) and Chernigov (1024-1034 / 36).

Life

Mstislav was a son of Vladimir the Great . His mother was probably Czech. The year of birth is unknown, probably around 983. Around 988, he was appointed Prince of Tmutarakan by his father.

In 1024 he attacked Kiev , but could not conquer it. He made the areas east of the Dnieper subject and established his seat in Chernigov . He defeated his brother Yaroslav the Wise of Kiev in the Battle of Sern and then ruled as an independent prince of Chernigov and Tmutarakan. Between 1034 and 1036 he died while hunting. His principality fell to Yaroslav the Wise.
