Emergence

The Muggedätscher were founded by former members of the Sans Gêne clique. In 1954, some members of the Sans-Gêne are said to have confessed in their own or someone else's (carnival) procession. One of these older "cheaters" was threatened by the parent company with expulsion from the Sans-Gêne, since according to the Sans-Gêne's statutes it was not allowed to stand on a strange train. He commented on the allegations on November 15, 1954, admitted to having joined another platoon, but also wrote that he would welcome it if an old guard of the Sans-Gêne could be founded, but slowly certainly a considerable age difference can be noticed. Most of the older members were dissatisfied with the length of the route and the short breaks and therefore wanted to found an old guard.

On August 29, 1955, the "Sans-Gêne Alte Garde" was founded in the restaurant "zur alten Gerbe" without consulting the tribe. At this meeting a chairman was elected, rules were set and the goals and wishes for the next carnival were discussed. The Fasnachts-Comité and the tribe were subsequently informed about this establishment. In principle, the tribe was not against an old guard, but in autumn 1957 it set up a founding statute to which the old guard was supposed to submit. These statutes went very far and included, among other things, the tribe's right of veto at every meeting. Of course, the Old Guard did not agree and asked the tribe to reconsider their actions.

Thereupon the tribe informed the Comité and the Old Guard that the "Sans-Gêne Alte Garde" "... for reasons that could not be reconciled with our association statutes" would be dissolved and asked the Carnival Comité for a name to be removed from the register. In addition, the older members were described as not worthy of the name "Sans-Gêne". After this letter, the situation threatened to escalate and the Sans-Gêne threatened to take legal action against the older members if they continued to use the name. The members then gave up the name and looked for a new one, which was determined on February 7, 1958. A member who worked for a radio suggested the name of a radio show that was very popular at the time, "Dr Muggedätscher". This was elected by the members with a large majority. The radio station was contacted and had no objection to it. The “Sans-Gêne Alte Garde” was renamed “Fasnachtsgesellschaft Muggedätscher”.

history

  • In 1956 the Muggedätscher consisted of only six drums without a whistler, in 1958 they were one of the first cliques to accept women in all of Basel, so that several whistlers and speakers could stand up.
  • In 1975 the Muggedätscher had their first appearance with the «Gluggsi» at the Monstre drum concert, or «Drummeli» for short.
  • In 1980 the "Muggedätscher Junge Garde" was founded, which first took part in the carnival in 1981 with 32 lecturers and 12 whistlers. The Muggedätschers were also pioneers in founding the Young Guard, as the Young Guard was at that time one of the few in which girls were accepted and a later transfer to the tribe was guaranteed.
  • In 1983 the "Muggedätscher Binggis " were founded.
  • In 1995 the "Muggedätscher Alte Garde" was founded.

Clique life

In addition to making music, which is not only cultivated at Carnival, camaraderie with the Muggedätschern comes first. There are many occasions throughout the year where you can get closer. Every year before the carnival, the clique's internal prize drums and whistles take place, an event that lasts a whole day. Whoever can drum and whistle best wins. At the carnival there is the so-called “Gotte- / Götti-Halt” (godmother / godfather stop), where a member of the tribe or the old guard does something with one of the young guard or the Binggis. In spring there is an excursion with the Young Guard, mostly to Europa-Park , and in summer there is a barbecue.

The “Mugge- Boschdille ”, a clique-internal newspaper with news, information and dates, appears four times a year .

The “basement” of the Muggedätscher is the “Säntihanstor”, an old city gate of Basel.

Carnival preparations

Like every other Basel clique, the Muggedätscher carnival society has to prepare for the carnival anew every year. This includes finding the subject (topic) that changes every year. This is done by a subject commission for each section (Binggis, Young Guard, Tribe, Old Guard). After the subject has been found, costumes are sewn, larvae (masks) are covered by hand, the lantern is covered and painted. This takes about three to four months, during which the Muggedätscher people work almost every evening in the handicraft cellar.
