Mugla (Bulgaria)

Mugla ( Bulgarian Мугла ) is a village in southern Bulgaria . It belongs to the municipality of Smolyan in Smolyan .

The village of Mugla is located in the Rhodope Mountains . Until 1983 it belonged to the Dewin municipality , but today it belongs to the Smolyan municipality. It is 25 km from the town of Smolyan and 18 km from the town of Devin, near the top of Golyan Perelik. In winter, the village is repeatedly cut off from the outside world due to heavy snowfall.

The first inhabitants of the village settled there because of the water. A few years ago there was a school in the village with over 300 students. Today the average age of the inhabitants is over 50 years. The school is closed. The village is called Mugla because there is often fog (Bulgarian: mugla ) there.

From 1878 to 1886 the village of Mugla was part of the so-called Republic of Tymrash . It also belonged to the Provisional Government of Western Thrace in 1913. At that time it was the administrative center.

The place has given its name to the Mugla Passage , a strait in the archipelago of the South Shetland Islands in Antarctica , since 2010 .

The majority of the inhabitants profess Islam .

Others

Every year in August the residents celebrate a festival. A music group performs at this festival.
