Mul Mantar (Mool Mantra)
Maha Mantar written in Gurmukhi

The Mul Mantar ( Punjabi : ਮੂਲ ਮੰਤਰ, " Root mantra "), anglicized spelling Mool Mantra , consists of the first lines of Guru Granth Sahib , the sacred scripture of Sikhism . According to tradition, it is said to have been uttered by Guru Nanak after he awoke to enlightenment from a three-day deep trance underwater . The Mul Mantar is considered to be the essence of the spiritual teachings of Sikhism. The entire Guru Granth Sahib is z. T. also interpreted as an interpretation of the Mul Mantar.

The traditional Mul Mantar consists of the following words:

Ek Ong Kaar, Sat Nam, Karta Purkh, Nirbhao, Nirvair, Akal Murat, Ajuni Saibhang, Gurprasaad. Yep Aad Sach, Jugad Sach, Hai bhi sach, Nanak Hosi bhi sach.

Until Gurprasad it is called the "Maha Mantar": The Mul Mantar has been taught from the Amrit baptism in the Khalsa Panth in 1699 to Nanak hosi bhi sach. The 5 main mantars are in the traditional Gurmat teaching. Some Sikh groups only recite until Gurprasad (SGPC, AKJ, Sikhmissionaries, 3HO)

  1. Beej Mantar - Ik Onkar
  2. Maha Mantar - Ik Onkar to Gurprasad
  3. Mool Mantar - Ik Onkar to Nanak hosee bhee sach
  4. Mala Mantar - Japji Sahib
  5. Gur Mantar - Waheguru

Translated it means something like: God is one without opposites, He is the Creator, his name is true, the Creator of everything that is, He is without fear, without enmity, his form is timeless, beyond birth and death, from himself being out, understood by the grace of the Guru. Recite. He existed from the beginning, He existed before His creation and in all four ages. It is omnipresent here and now. Guru Nanak Dev says the Creator will exist and be true forever and ever.

In Punjabi , the term god has no gender, so the deity is thought of as neither male nor female.

The Mul Mantar is the beginning of the Jap Ji Sahib , the first of the five daily prayers, the Nitnem .
