Mullah Mohammad Yaqoob or Mullah Yaqoob ( Arabic ملا محمد يعقوب; * 1990 ) is the eldest son of the five children of Mullah Mohammed Omar , the Afghan mujahideen , commander and founder of the Taliban and former emir of the Islamic emirate of Afghanistan .

Life

Mullah Yaqoob is an ethnic Pashtun of the Hotak tribe who is part of the larger Ghilzai branch. When his father died in April 2013 and rumors surfaced that he had been murdered by competitor Akhtar Mansur , Yaqoob denied that his father had been killed and insisted that he died of natural causes. But Mullah Yaqoob still refused to support the leadership of Taliban chief Mullah Akhtar Mansur when he was elected leader of the Taliban organization on July 29, 2015. He wasn't ready to take a top position in the group.

In 2016, Mullah Yaqoob was appointed by the Taliban to be responsible for the military commission in 15 of the 34 provinces of Afghanistan. The Military Commission, headed by Mullah Ibrahim Sadr, is responsible for overseeing all military affairs of the Taliban. Mullah Yaqoob was also appointed to the Taliban's highest decision-making council, the Rehbari Shura.

After the death of Mullah Akhtar Mansur on May 21, 2016, he was replaced by Mullah Haibatullah Achundsada as the new Taliban leader. Siradschuddin Haqqani took over the mandate as MP from Akhtar Mansur and at the same time retained his previous position as leader of the Haqqani network and his position as deputy leader of the Taliban after Haibatullah Achundsada, while Mullah Yaqoob was appointed second deputy to the new Taliban chief.
