Multicatan

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Multicatan was an online version of the board game The Settlers of Catan .

The game

For the 10th anniversary of the nomination of the board game Settlers von Catan as " Game of the Year " in 1995, game author Klaus Teuber created an online version and an adaptation for game on the board in the summer of 2005.

The online game "Multicatan" was part of the PlayCatan game portal (previously "Klaus Teubers Spielwiese"). There "light versions" of some Klaus Teuber games could be played in a browser version. First, based on Barbarossa and the riddle masters, the "Barbarossa riddle" went online. The second game was "Entdecker Light", later renamed "Oceania", as a light version of Die neue Entdecker , followed by "Starship Catan Light", based on Starship Catan.

In January 2016, PlayCatan and thus Multicatan was discontinued.

The game

"Multicatan" was not a light version of The Settlers of Catan , but an independent game with slightly modified or expanded rules. The playing field was virtually endless, which means that virtually any number of players could settle at the same time. Each player started on a small starting island, on which all basic raw materials were found. In his direct neighborhood, each player found five players whom he could reach with ships (according to the seafarers expansion ). There were special victory points for reaching foreign islands.

The special thing is that the dice were not rolled alternately: all neighbors rolled the dice when they were online. Whoever had accumulated enough raw materials was allowed to build immediately. If a neighboring player came before you at a coveted building site, you had to look for an alternative building option.

A game of "Multicatan" extended over seven game days for each player. On the first day of the match he was allowed to roll two dice 15 times and was allocated raw materials according to his settlements and cities, just like in the regular board game. Throwing the 7 also threatened danger from the robber, whereby each "Multicatan" player had a "private robber" who was only on his own starting island. If the dice rolls and the raw materials received were used up, the player could log out and log in again 24 hours later.

On the following days the player was allowed to roll fewer and fewer dice - because then his settlements should automatically discard more raw materials; on the last days of the game he was only allowed to roll the dice 7 times a day. Even if there were no more dice rolls available, the player could go online at any time and submit trade offers to his neighbors, the neighboring players were informed by email. The trade offers were evaluated on a 24-hour basis.

A modification of the game with six players was playable in the Catan online world.
