Multiple-image Network Graphics (acronym MNG / mɪŋ /, English network graphics with multiple images ) is an open file format for describing animated graphics files.

MNG is closely related to the PNG graphic format.

history

When the development of the PNG format began at the beginning of 1995, it was decided not to include any support for animation - not least because this feature of the GIF format was rarely used at the time. Nevertheless, MNG soon began to be developed as an animation-supporting variant of PNG.

Version 1.0 of the MNG specification was released on January 31, 2001. However, MNG is not a W3C recommendation or an ISO standard like PNG.

File structure

The structure of MNG files is basically the same as that of PNG files. They only differ in the slightly different signature (8A 4D 4E 47 0D 0A 1A 0A in hexadecimal ) and the use of a far greater range of units to support all of the animation possibilities that the format provides. Images to be used in the animation are saved in the MNG file as encapsulated PNG or JNG images; this also enables alpha transparency and lossy compression.

Two MNG versions with reduced complexity are also defined: MNG-LC ('low complexity', for example: low complexity) and MNG-VLC ('very low complexity', for example: very low complexity). This allows programs to use some features of the MSG standards without the complete MNG specification to implement .

MNG does not have a registered MIME type , but video / x-mng can be used.

support

The developers of the MNG format hoped that MNG would begin to replace GIF for animated images on the World Wide Web , as PNG has already partially done for non-animated images. This did not happen, however, and the widespread web browsers that sometimes offered MNG support have now removed them. The websites of large companies rely instead on HTML5 for animations , as sound transmission can also replace film formats. In the past, Adobe Flash was often used here , but most websites have switched to alternative formats. None of the most widely used web browsers support the MNG format on their own.

Apple Safari does not support the display of MNG files. MNG support in version 1.5a has been removed from the Mozilla Application Suite , and all future versions do not seem to include support again, despite complaints from the community . Netscape Navigator supported MNG versions 6.0, 6.01 and 7.0, as these versions were based on Mozilla. An unofficial plugin can be used to integrate support into Mozilla Firefox . Konqueror has provided support for MNG in the past, but this has been removed.
