Munichion

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Munichion ( ancient Greek Μουνυχιών or Μουνιχιών ) was a month in the Attic calendar .

It was the tenth month of the Attic calendar, in the Julian calendar it roughly corresponds to March / April. According to Plutarch , the name was given in honor of Demetrios I Poliorketes at the end of the 4th century BC. Changed to Demetrion . However, since the name Munichion was still in use, the new name either stayed short or Plutarch's tradition was incorrect.

While in classical Greek literature usually the spelling Μουνυχιών occurs, can be found in later literature and especially in later inscriptions the spelling Μουνιχιών .

The name of the month goes back to the Munichia festival , which was celebrated on the 16th Munichion in honor of Artemis Munichia . Because of the only local significance of the festival, the month name was only used in the Attic calendar and cannot be found in any other Ionic calendar .
