The superior auricular muscle ("upper auricle ") is a small skin muscle of the head and the largest of the auricle muscles . It arises from the galea aponeurotica and attaches to the anterior upper surface of the auricle .
In animals in which the ears are significantly more mobile and play a greater role in facial expressions and social behavior ("ear play"), several upper ear muscles are developed. They are known as the auricular dorsal muscles . A small sheet of cartilage - the so-called scutum ("shield") - is embedded in this muscle group . In detail these are:
- Interscutular muscle
- Parietoscutularis muscle
- Parietoauricular muscle .
