Museo Teatrale alla Scala
The Museo Teatrale alla Scala is a museum dedicated to music and theater in Milan .
History and collections
The museum, which is located next to the opera house of the same name on Piazza della Scala, was founded in 1911 and opened on March 8, 1913. It is based on a large private collection that had been auctioned two years earlier and was procured from both government and private sources.
The exhibits include costumes, stage sets, score autographs and manuscripts. There are also musical instruments of historical interest on display, as well as paintings by musicians and actors, and a range of related utensils, including valuable ceramic figurines with figures from the Commedia dell'arte and board games that were available to pass the time in the theater foyer.
The Biblioteca Livia Simoni, the institution's library, is located on the second floor of the museum. It was founded in 1952 with 40,000 volumes donated by the author and critic of the Corriere della Sera Renato Simoni (born September 5, 1875 in Verona, † July 5, 1952 in Milan) and named in honor of his mother Livia.
Today it comprises around 140,000 works on theater history, opera and ballet, including libretti, magazines and the correspondence of musicians, actors and dancers as well as books.
