The Museo del Traje in Madrid is a Spanish museum about the history of costume and traditional dress fashion as well as textile production technology .

Name designations

In 1925 the exhibition was opened under the name Exposición del Traje Regional e Histórico , which was called Museo del Traje Regional e Histórico from 1927 to 1934 . Then it was renamed the Museo del Pueblo Español and in 1993 the Museo Nacional de Antropología . It has been known as the Museo del Traje since 2004 and is the Centro de Investigación del Patrimonio Etnológico (Center for Ethnological Cultural Research). The museum director is Helena López de Hierro d'Aubarède under the Ministry of Culture.

The costume and traditional costume museum, founded in 1925, is the center for ethnological research in Spain. The exhibition provides access to information and graphic documentation on more than 11,000 cultural assets. The exhibition comprises 5,729 objects and is supplemented by a collection of 5,390 archive holdings. The permanent exhibition in the museum's showcases follows a rotation schedule. Temporary exhibitions are also shown. The Museo del Traje has its own restoration workshop.

The museum's library provides information services and documentation for professionals, researchers and the general public. It houses a collection of documents and literature on anthropology, the ethnological heritage of Spanish culture, as well as the historical evolution of costume and textile production techniques to the latest trends in the fashion industry. It is located on the 1st floor with direct access from the main entrance and covers an area of ​​1000 m². The reading room has 36 seats. The digitized complete catalog is available to users of the reading room and via internet access.
