Nick Mazzarella

Nick Mazzarella (born July 15, 1984 in Woodridge , Illinois ) is an American jazz and improvisation musician ( alto saxophone , also flute ), who is mainly active in the Chicago music scene.

Live and act

Mazzarella came to jazz through his father's records; an early role model was John Coltrane , before engaging with the music of Ornette Coleman during his studies . Since 2002 he has played in the jazz, improvisation and rock scene in Chicago. He studied at DePaul University , where he obtained a Bachelor of Music in 2006 and a Masters in 2009. He performed with the DePaul University Jazz Ensemble with Phil Woods . He works with his own band projects, such as the Nick Mazzarella Trio (with Frank Rosaly and Anton Hatwich ). He has also worked with ensembles by Ken Vandermark ( Audio One and the Chicago Reed Quartet ), Rob Mazurek ( Alternate Moon Cycles and the Exploding Star Orchestra ), Frank Rosaly, Dana Hall , Mike Reed , Devin Hoff , Cameron Pfiffner , Mars Williams , Keefe Jackson , Wayne Montana / Damon Locks and Mikel Avery with.

After Mazzarella worked with his own quartet in 2014, which consisted of Jim Baker (piano), Joshua Abrams (double bass) and Avreeayl Ra (drums), he is currently (2017) concentrating on his trio and quintet. He also works with Tomeka Reid , Hamid Drake , Joshua Abrams, Rob Mazurek and Frank Rosaly . Mazzarella is also the curator of the Anagram series, which is featured weekly at Elastic Arts in Chicago and the Ratchet series, which is featured monthly at Cafe Mustache in Chicago.
