The former industrialist villa Villa Erckens is located in the city of Grevenbroich and is the counterpart to the building ensemble of the Grevenbroich city park island. Today, the listed building houses the permanent exhibition entitled “Museum of the Lower Rhine Soul”, which gives an overview of everyday life, culture and mentality in the “ Lower Rhine ” region on around 370 m² of exhibition space . In addition, the department of culture of the city of Grevenbroich is located in the Villa Erckens.

history

In 1887 the industrialist Oskar Erckens had the building built in the classical style as his family's residence in the immediate vicinity of his business, the Erckens & Co cotton spinning and weaving mill. The economic slump as a result of the Second World War, from which the company no longer recovered, led to the closure of the business premises in 1956. After the closure, the city of Grevenbroich acquired the Villa and Park from the Erckens family in order to use the building as an administrative branch until the 1980s.

With the rededication of the house as a "Museum in the City Park" and the establishment of the ethnographic collection, which was presented to the public on June 17, 1989, the use of the Villa Erckens as a city museum began. After a phase of restructuring and structural renovation, the house was reopened on March 4, 2012 as the "Museum of the Lower Rhine Soul".
