The Museum of Broken Relationships in Zagreb

The Museum of Broken Relationships ( Croatian Muzej Prekinutih Veza , English Museum of Broken Relationships ) in Zagreb / Croatia shows evidence of painful separations and relics of lost loved ones. In 2011 it was honored with a special award for the “ European Museum of the Year ” award .

Emergence

After Olinka Vištica and her then partner Dražen Grubišić split up, it was very difficult for both of them to accept the end of their love and the subsequent separation as long as both were still surrounded by memories from happier times together. So it was decided to give the relics from those days a special place where they are safely kept and where they no longer disturb everyday life, which is now differently designed, through constant memory. After the collection had been transported from place to place worldwide as a traveling exhibition since August 2007, it has been permanently housed in Zagreb since November 2010 and can be viewed there every day. So far the exhibition could be viewed in Croatia, Serbia, Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Germany, the USA and South Africa. A temporary presentation at additional locations will continue to be organized upon request.

Exhibits

Both now collected objects that other people also became an unloved remnant of a failed relationship. The most diverse objects; sometimes bizarre, often striking and tragicomic, are now symbolically as a symbol for a broken relationship. Everyone can contribute to the exhibition with their exhibit.

They reveal many unfulfilled hopes, misunderstood proofs of favor and finally also evidence of painful separations: this is how an "ex-ax" is presented, whose purpose it was to cut up the furniture of a former partner. People from all over the world have given their souvenirs to the museum. A pair of panties that could be eaten came from Switzerland, latex breasts to strap on from Serbia, an electric hotplate from Egypt, plush picture frames from Croatia. The sensitive explanatory texts in English and Croatian bring the viewer closer to the story that belongs to each exhibit - sometimes obvious, sometimes in clauses.

Awards

At the end of the annual conference of the European Museum Forum in Bremerhaven , the undoped awards for “European Museum of the Year” were presented on May 21, 2011. The Museum of Broken Relationships was selected for a special award from among 34 museums from 15 countries. The Kenneth Hudson Award , named in memory of the founder of the European Museum of the Year Award, is given to that museum, project or group of people who have achieved the most unusual, boldest and perhaps most controversial achievement in favor of a common view of the role of museums has shown in society and is promoting it in the spirit of Kenneth Hudson.
