The Museum of Fine Arts in Mulhouse is a French art museum in Mulhouse (Department Haut-Rhin). It is located in a stately town house from the 18th century, also known as "Villa Steinbach". It was founded in 1864 on the initiative of Frédéric Engel-Dollfus and the Industrial Society of Mulhouse (SIM) and today belongs to the city of Mulhouse.

history

Mulhouse was only unified with France in 1798 and experienced an economic boom and extraordinary population growth in the 19th century, but unlike comparable cities, it had no museum or art collection of any importance.

In 1864 the rich collector Frédéric Engel-Dollfus took up the idea of founding a museum. The son-in-law of Jean Dollfus , CEO of DMC, donated 16 paintings to the museum and convinced the Industrial Society, the city and other local art lovers to help build a real collection. The donations were gradually received, but the building promised by the city in 1866 was not made available due to the Franco-Prussian War and the subsequent annexation by Germany.

The industrial company decided to build the building on its own. It was inaugurated in 1863; its first floor was intended for the art museum. The imposing structure on the bank of the canal now houses the textile printing museum. The catalogs document the growth of the collections: 296 paintings were listed in 1891, and 492 in 1897.
