Music theater studies
Music theater studies is an interdisciplinary bachelor's degree ( Bachelor of Arts ) at the University of Bayreuth , in which the two academic disciplines theater studies and musicology participate equally. The course contents are the different forms of music theater in the fields of opera, operetta, musical, dance and experimental forms.
History and special features
The course, run by the Music Theater Department of the University of Bayreuth, has been offered since the winter semester 2008/09. The specialist group consists of the two professorships of musicology and theater studies as well as the chair of theater studies, with special emphasis on music theater at the University of Bayreuth. The combination of the academic subjects musicology and theater studies in one course is unique in this constellation in Europe. There is a close connection to the Research Institute for Music Theater of the University of Bayreuth ( fimt ), whose director is also the holder of the chair.
Entry requirements and curriculum
The prerequisite for admission is a university entrance qualification and a successfully completed aptitude assessment procedure. In addition to imparting basic methodological knowledge in theater and musicology as well as theater history, the curriculum is dedicated to the theoretical and aesthetic examination of music theater and its production conditions. The focus is on contemporary music theater (dance theater, experimental music theater, performance) and dramaturgical practice. The standard period of study is six semesters.

The bachelor's degree opens up opportunities in the professional fields of music theater (dramaturgy, directing / assistant director, public relations), music journalism, cultural management and administration and the music industry (music publishers, sound recording industry).
