Sedel Music Center in Lucerne

The Sedel Music Center (Lucerne German: Sädel ) is a venue for concerts in Lucerne . It also offers space for rehearsals and studios.

history

The Sedelhof originally belonged to the Rathausen convent . In 1838 the building was bought by the Canton of Lucerne . At first it was used as the prison's work yard, then from 1884 to 1975 as a cantonal penal institution. The new building took place from 1932 to 1934; the building was maintained until 1971. After the prison was closed, the Sedel was mainly used as a file depot for various government offices until 1980.

The city reacted in the wake of the protest movements of the 1980s and the increasingly scarce space for the music scene in Lucerne after the fire in the Kriegerhaus and a demonstration announced for February 7, 1981 (at which the two Lucerne bands Crazy and MAD performed live) Lucerne and negotiated with the Canton of Lucerne about the use of the Sedel as a rehearsal venue for musicians in Lucerne. On January 19, 1981, the east wing was assigned to the city of Lucerne. After renovating the interior, it was handed over to the Lucerne Musicians' Interest Group (ILM) on April 15, 1981 . In 1983 the west wing was also renovated and has since been managed by the ILM.

Since then, the whole building has been used for concerts and music rehearsals. Many of the original cells are rented out as studios.
