As Muta a "silent" sound (is plosive ) respectively. The mutae include the consonants d, t, p, b, c and g . This is particularly important in Latin poetry, because when muta (silent sound) and liquida (flowing sound) meet, no position length is required.

In the case of timpani and transposing wind instruments, muta describes the requirement for a necessary change in tuning.
