The MTE or Mutations Engine is the first polymorphism program generator for computer viruses . The program was written and published in 1992 by the hacker Dark Avenger .

Before the generator was released, most viruses were detected by antivirus checksums . However, the mutation engine made it possible for even novice viruses to be highly polymorphic. This created a major problem for anti-virus software manufacturers as new detection methods had to be developed. Some manufacturers could not develop these and therefore stopped the further development of their virus scanner.
