Mwangwego script
The Mwangwego script is the Abugida alphabet of the Malawian languages such as the official language Chichewa .
The Mwangwego script was conceptualized by Nolence Mwangwego on November 10, 1977 after he found evidence that Malawi had a script system prior to the forcible arrival of Europeans and contact with the peoples of what is now Malawi.
Native writing systems
The evidence of a writing system prior to European conquest is based on the Bantu languages spoken in the region. The verbs Kulemba and Kusimba , which mean "write" in Chichewa and Kyandonde respectively, indicate that there was already a writing system in Malawi. In addition, rock carvings with various symbols have been found in Malawi .

The Mwangwego font was developed from 1979. The writing system consists of indigenous-based symbols created by Mwangwego between 1979 and 1997.
Use and reception
The script was officially launched in 2003 and is slowly gaining a following in Malawi. Public readings, fairs and exhibitions are held in academic institutions, and writing is also taught. In 2003 the Malawian Minister for Youth, Sports and Culture, Mr. Kamangadazi Chambalo , quoted as follows:
“The Mwangwego script has made history in itself. Regardless of how it is received by the nationwide public, the script is destined to go down in the annals of our history as a notable invention. "
Scientific writing subjects
The first person to learn the Mwangwego script after Mwangwego was Mwandipa Chimaliro . Ten other students learned the script in the same year and went on to teach the script to others.
Scripture Association
In 2007, over 10,000 Mwangweo students formed the Mwangwego Club, whose membership is open to those who have learned the scriptures.

Nolence Moses Mwangwego is a Zambian- born Malawian linguist and type developer. Mr. Mwangwego was born on July 1, 1951 in the Mwinilunga district of Zambia. He comes from the village of Yaphet Mwakasungula, in the area of the Supreme Chief Kyungu in the Karonga district . Mr. Mwangwego was declared mayor Yaphet Mwakasungula IV on December 29, 1997 because of his writing services. He has an oral and written command of Chewa , Tumbuka , Kyangonde , English , French and Portuguese . He is currently working as a French teacher at the French Cultural Center in Blantyre .
He is married to Ellen Kalobekamo and has four children.
