My Media System (MMS) is a free application for GNU / Linux that manages, displays and plays media collections such as pictures, films or music. MMS runs on a number of different hardware platforms, such as set-top boxes connected to a television or bespoke HTPCs connected to an HDTV . The first version was presented in the summer of 2002 and now runs on all common Linux distributions . The group of users is rather small compared to MythTV and is spread all over the world due to the availability in eleven languages. It is most widespread in Germany.

My Media System was originally known as Mpeg Menu System V2 (MMSv2) , but changed its name in October 2006, with the introduction of version 1.0.8, to illustrate the increased range of functions.

This free software is an alternative to the Microsoft Media Center - like MythTV or Freevo . In contrast to these two media center applications, MMS lacks an independent television module, but it is possible to integrate an external TV application such as the VDR . Some consider this fact to be the main advantage, since in their eyes VDR is supposedly unbeatable for digital satellite reception ( DVB-S ).

My Media System was initially developed as a DXR3 front end , but now runs on the following output systems: DVB , SDL , X11 , framebuffer .

Functionality:

  • Audio playback with cover display.
  • Film playback with information from the IMDb .
  • Slide show for viewing pictures.
  • Games (integrates common Linux game emulators: Amiga, Super Nintendo, Sega)
  • TV (via VDR ).
  • EPG (Electronic Program Guide )
  • Weather forecast
  • Support of different skins
