Mysterieuse with a clockwork hidden in the frame

Mysterieuse ( French: mysterious ) is a support clock in various designs with initially undetectable drive for the hands or the pendulum . The mostly very small movements of these clocks are cleverly hidden, for example in a pointer or on the edge of the case. Such types of clocks often have a transparent glass face. The Mysterieuse were very popular in the 19th century.

Swing pendulum clock from Junghans around 1895

Another well-known design in which the clock and pendulum form a structural unit is the "swing pendulum clock", which was manufactured by the Junghans company, among others . Junghans offered the clock with different bases: There was an elephant, a shepherd boy and two different young women. These metal figures carry the support points on which the whole pendulum clock swings. The clocks were made between 1890 and 1910.
