Under Postage Due (in Switzerland postage ) is meant for mail, postal fee, which is not pre-paid by the sender, but is to be collected by the recipient. The postage fee was formerly called postage , the postage fee Franco . The German Post AG speaks currently of Nachentgelt , which is calculated from the missing postage plus a collection fee.

The postal order and the universal postal treaties have largely stipulated a mandatory franking for mail. Since then, the relative number of postage-paid items has fallen sharply. It arises in the case of parcels, letters and postcards that have not been prepaid or not prepaid , and parcels and valuables that have been forwarded. A fee will be charged for the additional effort involved in the collection. The amount of the additional fee fluctuated, at times a uniform surcharge was charged, twice or one and a half times the shortfall. The amounts were noted on the parcel with blue pencil and collected from the recipient. In dealings with foreign countries, the post office usually stuck on the deficit with postage stamps and the postage was collected from the sender.

Since 2012 at the latest, mail with insufficient postage in Germany has generally been returned to the sender due to the mandatory franking and marked with a yellow sticker, which means that any existing (insufficient) postage stamps remain valid. In individual cases, e.g. B. If no sender is specified, the recipient will charge a collection fee of 70 ct per letter / compact letter in addition to the missing postage. (between 2012 and 2015 60 ct.), large / maxi letter € 2, in the event of forgery or manipulation, if the sender intentionally does not want to pay the fee or does not want to pay the fee in full, a charge of € 50. However, the recipient has the right to refuse acceptance and payment of the collection fee.

In addition, an additional fee may be charged for address checks.
