Double pointed needles

Double pointed needles made of different materials

A double pointed needle is used for knitting and consists of five, in English-speaking countries often only four of the same knitting needles . In contrast to other rigid knitting needles, these are equipped with two pointed ends. They can be made from a wide variety of materials, e.g. B. wood, metal (with different surfaces), bamboo or plastic, to name the most common. The lengths vary from 10 to 40 cm, whereby the longest are no longer in use in Germany today, but they are in the Anglo-Saxon region. In Germany, the long needles were replaced by circular needles.

Double pointed needles are used almost exclusively for knitting in the round. The lengths of the needles vary depending on the size of the knitted piece. 10 cm long needles are used for knitting the fingers of gloves, 40 cm long for knitting sweaters. In principle, however, it is possible to make small pieces of knitting with very long needles.
