The Nahda Movement ( Arabic حركة النهضة, DMG Ḥarakat an-Nahḍa ) is an Algerian party .

history

The party was founded in 1989 by Sheikh Abdallah Jaballah . Jaballah is ideologically influenced by the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood and the Nahda , an Islamic reform movement of the 19th century. The founding of the party was preceded by informal reading groups. She campaigned for amendments to the constitution that should promote religious and political pluralism , for the formation and preservation of cultural identity.

After internal party conflicts, most of their supporters switched to the Movement for National Reform (MRN) newly founded by Jaballah in 1999 . In the parliamentary elections of 2002, it became the third largest force with 43 seats. The remaining Nahda party, on the other hand, received just 0.6 percent of the vote and one seat.
