Narthex (ceremonial staff)

The narthex ( Middle Greek νάρθηξ , Latin ferula 'whip') is the insignia of the emperors in the late Byzantine Empire . It is a shepherd's staff worn during the coronation ceremony and by the patriarch , typically tau-shaped for the Eastern Church .
