Brake nose (veterinary medicine)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The nose brake is a tool to make horses less sensitive to pain during treatment by the veterinarian or other persons. The nose brake consists of a handle (usually made of wood) with a rope loop attached to it. The loop is placed around the horse's upper lip and then twisted in on using the handle. The resulting slight bruising of the upper lip leads to the release of endorphins in the horse's brain and thus to the suppression of pain stimuli .

Another design is made entirely of metal and looks like a large, pincer-like nutcracker .

The nose brake has also found its way into some coats of arms as the “ horse brake ”.
