- Bogotá / Colombia : For today's parliamentary elections, security measures are being taken out of fear of attacks by paramilitaries. The main challenger to the conservative President Álvaro Uribe Vélez is likely to be the liberal Horacio Serpa .
- The Hague / Netherlands : Forensic doctors from the Hague Tribunal have not yet been able to clarify the cause of Slobodan Milošević's death . Chief Prosecutor Del Ponte does not comment on Serbian speculation about the poisoning of the former president, but believes that suicide is possible. The results of the autopsy would be available by Monday morning. Del Ponte was frustrated that the verdict would soon fall despite many interruptions because of Milošević's heart problems. The convicted Milan Babić's suicide the previous week now reinforces Belgrade's impression that Hague is not a safe place for Serbian nationalists. The chief prosecutor stressed that the arrests of Radovan Karadžić and his military chief Ratko Mladić for genocide were now urgent.

The municipalities demand 40 hours per week, the Ver.di union wants to stay at 38.5. 220,000 people are affected, while negotiations for 800,000 state employees have been suspended for a week.
- DR Congo : After the visit of the EU foreign affairs representative Solana , the EU is likely to send soldiers to secure the elections. It is still open whether they are under German leadership; Chancellor Merkel is positive, SPD circles have reservations.
- France : After around a million people demonstrated against the relaxed dismissal law on Saturday , the unions are now threatening a general strike if President Chirac signs the law. It was decided to counteract the youth unemployment rate of 22%.
- Gaza / Palestinian Territories : The shortage of supplies has increased since international aid was in question. Since the election, Israel has sealed off the Hamas stronghold of Gaza from the West Bank for security reasons . The cause of the accident is still unknown, although technicians from the manufacturer of the bus examined the wreck.
- Minsk / Belarus : In the capital of Belarus, around 5000 people are still protesting against the re-election of Aljaksandr Lukashenka in the presidential elections on Sunday .
- Beijing / China : During his visit to Beijing, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the project of a natural gas and an oil pipeline from West Siberia to China. The latter had been agreed earlier but was delayed by Russia.
- Redmond / United States : The software company Microsoft has postponed the introduction of its new Windows Vista operating system to early 2007. The reason for the postponement is efforts to improve the security of the system.
- Spain : The Basque underground organization ETA has announced a "permanent ceasefire" but expects the banned Batasuma party to be approved. In the past 3 years, the ETA has carried out bomb attacks, but no one was killed because of advance warnings.

- Hamburg / Germany : In the evening in the wake of a heavy thunderstorm, a windpipe draws a path of devastation through the Harburg district . In Harburg's inland port, two crane operators are killed when their cranes overturn and two other people are seriously injured. A short circuit causes a power outage that affects 300,000 residents, the Harburg hospital and the ship reporting plant , which monitors shipping in the region, for several hours.
- Iraq : Shiite Muslims and a mixed US-Iraqi patrol shot at killing 22 people. A Shiite leader, however, claims that the soldiers attacked the nearby mosque .
- Kiev / Ukraine : In yesterday's parliamentary elections , the parties of the “ Orange Revolution ” lost a lot of votes. The winner of the election is the Russophile party of ex-prime minister Viktor Yanukovych , who was voted out in 2004, with around 30% , while that of the current president ( Viktor Yushchenko ) falls to 15%. - France : The demos and strikes against the labor law reform lead to another day of action. In 135 demonstrations, pressure is to be increased on the Villepin government to withdraw the planned relaxation of dismissal protection in order to reduce unemployment . Domestic connections in public transport, air traffic and the school system are impaired. President Chirac has canceled all appointments outside Paris due to possible consultations.
- Khartoum / Sudan : The summit of the Arab League takes place in the Sudanese capital . Palestine political leader Abbas appeals to the Arab countries to increase financial aid and to Israel's electorate to "vote for peace". The Palestinians would never accept unilateral steps such as those planned by Israeli interim prime minister Ehud Olmert .
- Lower Austria , Vienna / Austria : The flood caused by the sudden melting of snow has flooded the banks of the Danube and Thaya . In Krems , work is being carried out on a 2-3 m high “mobile wall”, and in Vienna the relief channel of the new Danube will be opened.
- Plau / Germany : The regional synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Mecklenburg votes for a merger with the Pomeranian Evangelical Church .
- Ramallah / Palestinian Territories : Parliament votes on the new Hamas government. The Fatah opposition criticizes yesterday's government statement by Prime Minister Haniyeh and accuses Hamas of not recognizing the agreements concluded by the PLO with Israel. Since the elections at the end of January, the radical Islamic Hamas has had an absolute majority in the Legislative Council with 74 of the 132 seats , but it is outside the PLO, Israel’s international contractual partner . She refuses to recognize both, which is why President Abbas wants to recall her if necessary. She must renew her party program “in the interests of the Palestinian people” .

- Africa , Asia , South America : A total solar eclipse will occur today in a 15,000 km long strip from Brazil via North Africa and West Asia to Lake Baikal . In Central Europe , the eclipse can be partially seen, the time (between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.) depending on the position. From Switzerland to Bavaria the eclipse rate at 12:40 CEST is about 40% or a third of the solar disk , for Lower Austria at 12:48 it is about 55%. Around 1:50 p.m. the moon passed again.
- Bad Ischl / Austria : The two-day meeting of EU youth ministers aims to make young people more interested in Europe. Other topics include jobs and informal ( education ), apprenticeship and training positions (within 6 months for every school leaver), early school leavers (EU target: -10% by 2010) and a discussion on France's top topic, easing protection against dismissal . Finland will continue to pursue some thematic areas (especially the first one) under the EU Presidency from July 2006 .
- Paris / France : Due to the controversial first-time employment regulation (see protection against dismissal ), the five major trade unions are calling on President Chirac not to sign the law (statutory deadline in 9 days) and to renegotiate with the social partners . In doing so, they ignore Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin , whom they accuse of being unwilling to talk and being overwhelmed. The presidential office announced that Chirac would comment on this in the next few days. Allegedly, in view of the social unrest, 90% of MPs are in favor of removing or suspending the provision that should reduce youth unemployment.
- Vienna / Austria : The Caribbean losses of the trade union bank BAWAG PSK are drawing wider circles. After the resignation of the ÖGB President Verzetnisch, the National Council dealt with two urgent questions: one from the BZÖ to the opposition SPÖ , the other from the SPÖ to the finance minister , who is said to have known about the scandal and the inaction of the supervisory board for years .
