  • Germany : The strike in the public service (30,000 in 11 countries) is now after 5 weeks the longest of the DGB in 80 years. According to ver.di, 40,000 employees are taking part in actions ahead of tomorrow's top meeting of the collective bargaining parties . The negotiator of the federal states, Hartmut Möllring (Lower Saxony) suggests a pause for reflection in the absence of an agreement, which SPD politicians criticize.
  • Iraq : The United States' armed forces will hand over the Abu Ghuraib prison near Baghdad , which was notorious under Saddam Hussein, to the Iraqi authorities. In 2004, photos of the mistreatment of Iraqi prisoners sparked outrage around the world.

  • China : The People's Republic of China increased the number of people sentenced to prison terms by 10% in 2005 and an estimated 8,000 death sentences were carried out.
  • The Hague / Netherlands : Former Serbian President Slobodan Milošević , imprisoned at the UN War Crimes Tribunal since 2001, is found dead in his cell. The chief prosecutor Del Ponte believes suicide as a way out before the conviction is initially possible, but this is denied. The next day, Serb supporters speak of murder, and Moscow circles do not believe in an objective autopsy . Belgrade authorities want to prevent his grave from becoming an undesirable place of pilgrimage.
  • Paris / France : The student protests at the Paris universities against the loosening of the dismissal protection are violently ended by the police.

  • Australia : By chance, researchers discover underwater ants in mangrove forests. Their nests are regularly flooded with water, but the animals can swim up or crawl into air compartments, wherever they bring their food.
  • Berlin / Germany : The Linkspartei.PDS has to fear its parliamentary group status in the federal government after the WASG decision to compete against it in Berlin ; several constitutional lawyers raise concerns.
  • Bogotá / Colombia : For today's parliamentary elections, security measures are being taken out of fear of attacks by paramilitaries. The main challenger to the conservative President Álvaro Uribe Vélez is likely to be the liberal Horacio Serpa .
  • The Hague / Netherlands : Forensic doctors from the Hague Tribunal have not yet been able to clarify the cause of Slobodan Milošević's death . Chief Prosecutor Del Ponte does not comment on Serbian speculation about the poisoning of the former president, but believes that suicide is possible. The results of the autopsy would be available by Monday morning. Del Ponte was frustrated that the verdict would soon fall despite many interruptions because of Milošević's heart problems. The convicted Milan Babić's suicide the previous week now reinforces Belgrade's impression that Hague is not a safe place for Serbian nationalists. The chief prosecutor stressed that the arrests of Radovan Karadžić and his military chief Ratko Mladić for genocide were now urgent.
  • East Africa : Ethiopia and Eritrea report progress in their border conflict after talks.

  • Germany : In the public service collective bargaining dispute , the arbitration commission proposes a solution to end the partial strike, which should amount to 39 hours of work. The municipalities demand 40 hours per week, the Ver.di union wants to stay at 38.5. 220,000 people are affected, while negotiations for 800,000 state employees have been suspended for a week.
  • DR Congo : After the visit of the EU foreign affairs representative Solana , the EU is likely to send soldiers to secure the elections. It is still open whether they are under German leadership; Chancellor Merkel is positive, SPD circles have reservations.
  • France : After around a million people demonstrated against the relaxed dismissal law on Saturday , the unions are now threatening a general strike if President Chirac signs the law. It was decided to counteract the youth unemployment rate of 22%.
  • Gaza / Palestinian Territories : The shortage of supplies has increased since international aid was in question. Since the election, Israel has sealed off the Hamas stronghold of Gaza from the West Bank for security reasons . In Fatah there are increasing voices that Abbas should dissolve the autonomy authority. This would make Israel an occupying power again and it would be easier to induce contracts with the PLO and the donor states.
  • Minsk / Belarus : According to the election commission, incumbent Aljaksandr Lukashenka won the presidential election with 82.6%. The OSCE election observers found, however, that the elections were not fair and contradicted international norms. Thousands of people demonstrated in Minsk against the election result.
  • Palestinian autonomous territories : After the failure of the government negotiations with Fatah , the election winner Hamas agrees on a list of ministers in which the also extremist Popular Front PFLP has some positions. The Hamas ideologue Zahar is to become foreign minister, who approves of any resistance against Israel . President Abbas calls on Prime Minister-designate Ismail Haniya to adhere to the PLO's program and international agreements.

  • Arica / Chile : 14 people are killed in a serious bus accident, including 12 tourists from the USA as well as the driver and the guide. Two of the occupants survived the accident seriously injured. The bus was on the way back from a tour to the highest lake on earth in the Lauca National Park , came off the road in a curve and fell about 150 m into a ravine. The cause of the accident is still unknown, although technicians from the manufacturer of the bus examined the wreck.
  • Minsk / Belarus : In the capital of Belarus, around 5000 people are still protesting against the re-election of Aljaksandr Lukashenka in the presidential elections on Sunday .
  • Beijing / China : During his visit to Beijing, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the project of a natural gas and an oil pipeline from West Siberia to China. The latter had been agreed earlier but was delayed by Russia.
  • Redmond / United States : The software company Microsoft has postponed the introduction of its new Windows Vista operating system to early 2007. The reason for the postponement is efforts to improve the security of the system.
  • Spain : The Basque underground organization ETA has announced a "permanent ceasefire" but expects the banned Batasuma party to be approved. In the past 3 years, the ETA has carried out bomb attacks, but no one was killed because of advance warnings.
