  • Ankara / Turkey : After the death of a 14-year-old boy, the Ministry of Health denies that the H5N1 bird flu pathogen is virulent in Turkey .
  • Bad Reichenhall / Germany : When the ice rink collapsed , fifteen people were killed. The roof probably collapsed because of the large masses of snow that weighed on it during public ice skating.
  • Berlin / Germany : Europe's oldest hippopotamus meatball is dead. It was born in 1952 in the Berlin Zoo and became one of the visitors' favorites there. The meatball had to be put to sleep a few hours before the turn of the year. She was 53 years old
  • Berlin / Germany : The gas supply in the Federal Republic is not endangered by the dispute between Russia and Ukraine . This is what the utilities assume. Russia turned off the gas in Ukraine yesterday because of price disputes. Afterwards, the pressure on the gas pipelines in neighboring countries fell.
  • Berlin / Germany : SPD boss Matthias Platzeck has spoken out in favor of a return to Prussian virtues. Platzeck wants decency, reliability and the fulfillment of duties to find their way back into Germany. In an interview, the SPD leader said that although it sounds old-fashioned, it can bring Germany forward again.
  • Cologne / Germany : The German Chrobog family returns from Yemen in the evening . The former State Secretary for Foreign Affairs, his wife and their three sons were in the hands of Jeminite kidnappers for three days. According to Jürgen Chrobog, Germany did not pay a ransom for the release.
  • South Pacific : The region around the Fiji Islands has been hit by a major earthquake. The epicenter of the 7.1 magnitude quake was around 100 kilometers north of Ndoi Island, the US earthquake institute announced on its website. Initially, nothing was known about possible victims or damage. The quake occurred at a depth of almost 600 kilometers. As CNN reported, a tsunami warning initially issued for the US west coast was withdrawn by the authorities.

  • Bad Reichenhall / Germany : The rescue work on the collapsed ice rink is making slow progress. Hundreds of helpers have been trying to save the missing people since the collapse. The rescue work is made more difficult by incessant snowfall. The roof of the Bad Reichenhall ice rink collapsed yesterday afternoon under the load of snow.   • Berlin / Germany : The Dance - DJ Markus spoon , artist name DJ Spoon , is found dead at the age of 39 years in his Berlin apartment. The cause of death of the Frankfurt native is believed to be a heart attack. DJ Spoon was a pioneering DJ of the German techno movement.
  • Guantanamo / Cuba : Accompanied by persistent criticism of the detention conditions and length and allegations that detainees no war captured by international law are, take the US Agencies of the trials of two inmates of the camp again.   • Kathmandu / Nepal : New clashes between Maoists and the police lead to the deaths of 23 people, including 17 insurgents. The Maoists are demanding that King Gyanendra withdraw completely from politics. The disputes have been going on for around ten years.
  • La Paz / Bolivia : The new President Evo Morales is introduced into office. The socialist “peasant leader” is the first Indian to head the South American country. During the election campaign , Morales announced that he would nationalize the gas and oil reserves and legalize the cultivation of the coca bush because it is the livelihood of many farmers.
  • Lisbon / Portugal : Conservative Aníbal Cavaco Silva receives more than 50 percent of the vote in the presidential election, according to an interim result of the election commission. After counting almost 93 percent of the polling stations, Cavaco Silva had 50.89 percent of the vote. Since the polling stations that have not yet been counted were in the big cities, some commentators did not rule out that the candidate still missed an absolute majority and that a runoff election might be necessary.

  • Germany : With temperatures as low as minus 34 degrees, the night of the 22nd to the 23rd is the coldest day so far in winter 2005/06.   • Podgorica / Montenegro : Probably due to a failure of the brakes, a train crashed near the capital. All of the wagons fall into a 100 meter deep gorge. At least 39 travelers are killed and 135 injured.
  • Tenerife / Spain : In La Laguna , the Bishop's Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, burns down. The building dates from the 17th century.

  • Africa : There are now 15 million AIDS orphans under the age of 15 on the continent . In some areas of southern Africa more than 30% of the population is infected with HIV .
