- Ankara / Turkey : After the death of a 14-year-old boy, the Ministry of Health denies that the H5N1 bird flu pathogen is virulent in Turkey .
- Bad Reichenhall / Germany : When the ice rink collapsed , fifteen people were killed. The roof probably collapsed because of the large masses of snow that weighed on it during public ice skating.
- Berlin / Germany : Europe's oldest hippopotamus meatball is dead. It was born in 1952 in the Berlin Zoo and became one of the visitors' favorites there. The meatball had to be put to sleep a few hours before the turn of the year. She was 53 years old
- Berlin / Germany : The gas supply in the Federal Republic is not endangered by the dispute between Russia and Ukraine . This is what the utilities assume. - South Pacific : The region around the Fiji Islands has been hit by a major earthquake. The epicenter of the 7.1 magnitude quake was around 100 kilometers north of Ndoi Island, the US earthquake institute announced on its website. Initially, nothing was known about possible victims or damage. The quake occurred at a depth of almost 600 kilometers. As CNN reported, a tsunami warning initially issued for the US west coast was withdrawn by the authorities.

- Bad Reichenhall / Germany : The rescue work on the collapsed ice rink is making slow progress. Hundreds of helpers have been trying to save the missing people since the collapse. - Nouakchott / Mauritania : On the ninth stage of the Paris-Dakar Rally over 599 kilometers from Nouakchott to Kiffa in Mauritania, the 42-year-old Australian KTM rider Andy Caldecott succumbed to his injuries after a fall. The Dakar sports director Etienne Lavigne named a cervical vertebrae as the cause of death . According to the sports director, Caldecott was dead on the spot.
- Strasbourg / France : Les Verts demand a ban on the distribution of pork soup to the needy. The pork ingredient was added by the initiator of the campaign, the xenophobic group Alsace d'abord ( German: Das Alsace first ), in order to exclude Jews and Muslims from helping.

- Washington, DC / United States : The federal government of the United States has defended the controversial Guantánamo prison camp in Cuba following criticism from Chancellor Angela Merkel . Foreign Office spokesman Sean McCormack said on Monday that the camp at Guantanamo Base was set up for a very specific reason: "It keeps people who are very dangerous away from civilized society." If the detainees were released, they would resume their fight immediately, McCormack said. The US is currently holding 520 “terror suspects” in the prison on the eastern tip of Cuba, most of them from Afghanistan or Pakistan . Many of them have been detained for years without charge or legal advice. Washington regards them as "enemy combatants" who are not granted prisoner-of-war rights.

- Berlin / Germany : The Dance - DJ Markus spoon , artist name DJ Spoon , is found dead at the age of 39 years in his Berlin apartment. The cause of death of the Frankfurt native is believed to be a heart attack. DJ Spoon was a pioneering DJ of the German techno movement.
- Guantanamo / Cuba : Accompanied by persistent criticism of the detention conditions and length and allegations that detainees no war captured by international law are, take the US Agencies of the trials of two inmates of the camp again. One of the accused is 19-year-old Yemeni Ali Hamsa Ahmad el Bahlul, whose father , who was killed in Pakistan, was one of Al-Qaeda's most important donors, according to the USA . The Foreign Minister literally: According to “own sources, 23 Iraqi and Afghan citizens were actually interrogated at the Mihail Kogalniceanu base near the city of Constanza on the Black Sea”. - Istanbul / Turkey : In the morning the attacker Mehmet Ali Ağca is released from prison . It replaces President Ricardo Lagos from the same alliance ( presidential elections in Chile (2005/2006) ).

Since the polling stations that have not yet been counted were in the big cities, some commentators did not rule out that the candidate still missed an absolute majority and that a runoff election might be necessary.

- Darfur / Sudan : There is renewed fighting in the crisis region. 180,000 people have died since the conflict broke out.
