  • Kampala / Uganda : The opposition wants to contest President Museveni's alleged election victory. The central electoral commission reported that Yoweri Museveni (62) , who has ruled since 1986 , received 59% of the vote in the first multi-party election in 25 years, while opposition leader Kizza Besigye received 37%. The remaining 4–5 percent were divided between 3 other candidates. The Forum for Democratic Change speaks of electoral fraud because the results differ widely from an independent count in 19,000 of the polling stations . Museveni had the constitution changed shortly before the election to allow for a third term. The choice was also attended by EU - election observers criticized. The simultaneous parliamentary elections (284 MPs) represent progress, but the election campaign was already unfair because Besigye , who had only returned from exile at the end of 2005 , was brought to justice for alleged treason and rape. Besigye criticized the proceedings as politically motivated.
