  • Moscow / Russia : At the preliminary talks for the G8 summit in Saint Petersburg , the delegations speak out in favor of increasing global aid against AIDS . For this purpose, 9 billion US dollars are available in the current year , in 2010 it should be 23 billion US dollars. In Russia alone, 1.5 million AIDS patients are assumed, and in the rest of Eastern Europe, too, the number of diseases is increasing comparatively strongly.

Serbia - “Kosovo” corresponds to “Kosovo and Metohija” in official usage
Ollanta Humala
  • Belgrade / Serbia : The parliamentary republic of Serbia is founded. In contrast to its predecessor state , it only consists of central Serbia , the province of Vojvodina and the province of Kosovo and Metohija , while Montenegro is sovereign .
  • Chile : In many places there are again student demonstrations with tens of thousands of participants against a planned educational reform . In the previous week, some violent demonstrations were broken up by the police and around 200 people were arrested.
  • Lima / Peru : Social Democrat Alan García wins the runoff election for the presidency with 55% of the vote against left-wing nationalist Ollanta Humala . According to initial analyzes, many voters saw him as a lesser evil compared to the populist Humala, whose party, however, was by far the strongest force in parliament.
  • Mogadishu / Somalia : After weeks of fighting with well over 300 dead, the “militia of the Islamic courts” conquered the capital Mogadishu. It was only this year that some warlords who had been fighting for rule since 1991 had allied themselves in the “anti-terror alliance” ARPCT , but the population tended to trust the Islamists, who are supported by the Muslim clergy. The US is now concerned that Somalia - like Afghanistan at the time - could become a "safe haven" for terrorist groups.

  • Ankara / Turkey , Brussels / Belgium : In the accession negotiations with Turkey, the first - still unproblematic - negotiation chapter “Research and Science” is concluded. Before that, Cyprus had issued a threat to blockade and made a more stringent EU demand on Turkey to apply the customs union to Cyprus and to recognize its government. So far, Ankara has denied the Greek part of Cyprus access to shipping ports and airspace.
  • Beit Yehoshua / Israel : On the way from Tel Aviv to Haifa , a passenger train collides with a truck that is standing on a level crossing. Five occupants of the train are killed and 81 others are injured.
  • Luxembourg / Luxembourg : The foreign ministers of the member states of the European Union (EU) open the accession negotiations with the country Croatia , which the EU Council President Ursula Plassnik certifies that it is ready for membership. Talks were postponed in late 2005 due to UK opposition .

Romano Prodi
  • Atlantic : The tropical storm "Alberto" could develop into the earliest hurricane in the last 40 years. Since the storm swept across Cuba at 110 km / h , it has been increasing in strength, so that Florida Governor Jeb Bush called on the population on the coast to get to safety. The hurricanes in the Caribbean have been increasing since 1995 , which experts attribute partly to natural cycles and partly to anthropogenic climate change.
  • Gaza , Ramallah / Palestinian Autonomous Areas : The clashes between Hamas militias and the Fatah-dominated security service in Gaza threaten to lead to civil war. The political leader Mahmoud Abbas puts the troops on high alert. In Ramallah, Fatah supporters are protesting against the robust approach of government-loyal security forces and setting fire to the parliament building, in which the referendum planned by Abbas was debated without result.
  • Strasbourg / France : The Parliament of the European Union calls for the closure of the US prison camp on the Guantanamo Bay Naval Base in Cuba . The fight against terrorism should not come at the expense of human rights and the rule of law.
  • Vienna / Austria : Italy's new Prime Minister Romano Prodi starts his inaugural visits to the governments of the member states of the European Union in the current Presidency of the Council of Austria and emphasizes the good understanding between the two states. The fact that Chancellor Wolfgang Schüssel wished his predecessor Berlusconi an electoral victory in April does not affect friendship. According to the press conference, Prodi's priority is European policy (which he also wants to discuss in Paris and Berlin), but observers doubt the stability of his government, which only has a narrow majority in parliament. Schüssel and Prodi highlight the common transport and environmental policy. On June 30th, the groundbreaking ceremony for the exploratory gallery of the Brenner Base Tunnel will take place, the most ambitious transport project in the EU, which also serves to protect the Alps. The project is estimated at 7–8 billion euros and has been rejected by some parties and business representatives. EU coordinator Karel Van Miert recently promised a 20% contribution to the costs.

According to estimates by the US armed forces, the major offensive “Mountain Trust” will last the whole summer and target Taliban bases. Bundeswehr troops are not involved in the operation.
  • Sri Lanka : At least 58 people were killed in an attack on a fully occupied bus in Sri Lanka. 45 other passengers were injured when the vehicle was destroyed by a mine explosion.

More than 50,000 Iraqi and 7,000 US soldiers have been looking for insurgents and suspects since Wednesday in a major operation announced by Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki .
  • Taipei / Taiwan : The approximately 13 kilometers long Hsuehshan road tunnel , consisting of two tunnels , is opened.

Sunday June 18, 2006

Jan Ullrich
  • Bern / Switzerland : The German Jan Ullrich wins the Tour de Suisse cycling tour for the second time .
  • Catalonia / Spain : The inhabitants of Catalonia have voted on a new statute of autonomy that gives the region more independence. More than five million voters were called to vote on the statute, which gives the economically strong region in northeastern Spain more powers, especially with regard to tax revenue. 74% voted for the adoption of the statute, but with a low turnout of only 49%.
