geography

The Mittelland Canal

Glindenberg is located about twelve kilometers north of Magdeburg on the Mittelland Canal and about 1.5 kilometers west of the Elbe . The core town of Wolmirstedt is four kilometers west of Glindenberg . The place is bordered by the Mittelland Canal in the south, the Elbe in the east and the Ohre one kilometer to the west .

history

Glindenberg was mentioned for the first time around 1200 in a document inventory of the St. Agnes monastery in Magdeburg Neustadt. In the Thirty Years War from 1618 to 1648 parts of Glindenberg and the church were destroyed. In the First World War (1914-1918) 27 Glindenberger fell. In the Second World War (1939-1945) 41 residents of Glindenberg died.

After the Second World War, many refugees from the east lived in Glindenberg. Some only made a stopover, others stayed and found a new home in the village. But also native Glindenbergers left the place and looked for their luck in the Federal Republic. A Glindenberger who tried to get to the West after the inner-German border was sealed on August 13, 1961, was Klaus Kühne. Together with Hans-Peter Mielau (born January 24, 1943 in Königsberg), he wanted to dive into the Federal Republic of Germany on March 20, 1962 through the Aland, a tributary of the Elbe that flows into it at Schnakenburg. Both lost their lives in the process. While Mielau was washed ashore in West German territory weeks later and he was transferred to his parents in the GDR, where he was buried in the Magdeburg West Cemetery, there is no trace of Kühne. He was pronounced dead in 1999.

Glindenberg was repeatedly at risk of flooding from the Elbe. The place was evacuated temporarily during the floods of the century in 2002 and 2013 . In both cases the place was not flooded, but large areas of the surrounding area were under water.

The formerly independent community of Glindenberg was incorporated into the city of Wolmirstedt on July 1, 2009.

A milestone birthday was celebrated in Glindenberg from June 15, 2012 to June 17, 2012.
