World Cancer Day
World Cancer Day is celebrated on February 4th every year. Its aim is to raise public awareness of the prevention, research and treatment of cancer . He calls for information about the possibilities of cancer prevention and early cancer detection. National institutions/organizations such as e.g. B. the German Cancer Aid Foundation . The German motto is: "I AM AND I WILL". It calls on each individual to think: "Who am I and what will I do to fight cancer on World Cancer Day?" In Germany alone, around 510,000 people are diagnosed with cancer every year . experts ofThe World Health Organization (WHO) and major cancer organizations estimate that around half of these cancer cases could be prevented through a healthy lifestyle.

The day was agreed in February 2000 at the "World Summit Against Cancer" in the "Charter of Paris" and was first planned and organized in 2006 by the Union Internationale contre le Cancer (UICC), the World Health Organization and other organizations.
The UICC coordinates World Cancer Day, in which, according to its own information, almost 300 organizations in 86 countries worldwide take part - including the German Cancer Society , the German Cancer Aid and the German Cancer Research Center . The day of action has so far focused on preventing and fighting cancer in children.
role model for children
In 2010, on World Cancer Day, Harald zur Hausen , winner of the Nobel Prize in Medicine , launched a cross-border initiative with the aim of encouraging parents and grandparents all over the world to adopt health-conscious behavior in order to be role models for their children and grandchildren. "By changing one's lifestyle over the long term, almost half of all cancers can be avoided," emphasized the cancer researcher.
Official ceremony in Germany
With the first official ceremony in the federal city of Bonn on World Cancer Day 2014, the German Cancer Aid raised public awareness of the importance of this international day of remembrance. During the ceremony in the historic Old Town Hall on World Cancer Day, the German Cancer Aid Prize was awarded to the researchers Hans-Jochem Kolb and Hans-Georg Rammensee for their work in the field of immunotherapy.
The Blue Guides
For World Cancer Day 2020, the German Cancer Aid Foundation has intensified its information campaign "Actively preventing cancer" in order to draw the public's attention to the vital importance of prevention. Comprehensive material is used for this purpose, such as the updated specialist brochures in the Die Blauen Ratgeber series , which are financed by donations to the German Cancer Aid and are also distributed free of charge to interested people in other European countries throughout the year. This would provide equal support to those affected by cancer and their relatives, explained Cancer Aid CEO Gerd Nettekoven on World Cancer Day 2020. "We show where families and other caregivers can find practical, social and psychological help." The current guide "Help for Relatives" deals specifically with the problems, thoughts and feelings that relatives have to deal with. He provides help for adult sick people and their relatives to live together and at the same time addresses the special situation of children whose mother or father has become ill.
Worldwide promotions
On World Cancer Day 2017, nearly 1,000 activities took place in 135 countries and 11 landmarks were illuminated in World Cancer Day colors. In 2018, the global motto was “We can – I can … (ask for advice)”. It is based on the global three-year slogan “We can. I can.” and stands for the fact that people can help prevent many types of cancer through a healthy lifestyle. The current awareness campaign also aims to highlight the importance of physical activity in the fight against cancer by encouraging people to exercise with the support of sports clubs and alongside celebrity athletes.
First German Cancer Research Congress
The 1st German Cancer Research Congress took place on February 4th and 5th, 2019 at the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) in Heidelberg . The German Cancer Aid Foundation (DKH), the Network Oncological Centers of Excellence (CCC Network), the German Consortium for Translational Cancer Research (DKTK) and the National Centers for Tumor Diseases (NCT) jointly organized the congress to give cancer researchers a platform to present their research results , for exchange, for networking and for interaction. The Federal Minister for Education and Research , Anja Karliczek , and Theresia Bauer , Minister for Science, Research and the Arts in Baden-Württemberg, were present at the opening of the congress.
Outlook for the year 2030
According to the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) in February 2018, around 14 million people worldwide are diagnosed with cancer every year and 8.8 million die from cancer worldwide every year. The AACR estimates that in 2030 around 21 million new cases will occur worldwide and around 13 million people will die from cancer.
